Local recycling business celebrates Earth Day

Earth Day, which was established in 1970, created a new public awareness about pollution and the future of the environment. Earth Day made people think twice about litter, air pollution, loss of wildlife and landfills.

Another offshoot of Earth Day is the recycling movement. ėMore and more people are in the recycling habit, instead of sending their trash to landfills,î said Ray Polzin, owner of Polzin Recycle Center in Cambridge.

ėLast year we recycled 525,138 pounds of metals, nearly half of which were aluminum cans. By keeping appliances, brass, copper, scrap iron and other metals out of the landfills, we help the environment and people in our community make some money as well.î

In 2000, Polzin Recycling returned over $125,000 to local community customers.

To celebrate Earth Day, Polzin Recycle Center is having a Customer Appreciation Day. Free cookies and coffee will be served (in the Cambridge location only) on Saturday, April 21, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

The recycling center is located at 130 Cleveland Street.
