Punch cards and ëRainy Day Specialí new to Rush City pool

By MaryHelen Swanson

Itís a bummer when a summer day is interrupted by a rain shower, worse yet, a thunderstorm, especially if youíre a kid enjoying the Rush City Aquatic Center ñ swimming pool.

Just in time for the 2001 summer season, new things have been approved for the pool, including a ìRainy Day Special.î

If the manager determines the weather is questionable, the staff will offer an admission price of $1.25 per session.
A sign will be posted outside the pool and radio station WCMP will add this information to its announcements.

Also new this year will be punch cards - one for concessions and one for admissions.
Each concession punch card will cost $10 and punches will be in 25 cent increments.

Punch cards will remain in the concession stand and may be used for purchases of concession items only and only by the person whose name appears on the card. Punch cards are non-refundable.
Punch cards will also be available for admissions and each card is good for 10 individual sessions.
Punch cards for ages 9-61 will be sold for $25 and punch cards for 8 and under and 62 and up will be $15.

Both are a savings of $5.

Punch cards may be used by family members only (unless parent or guardian is present).
These punch cards will remain in the concessions area at all times and are non-refundable.
At the April 12 board meeting, Activities Director Bob Schlagel also asked the school board for approval of pay increases for concession workers and lifeguards.

The board authorized these increases to attract workers: Concession workers with no experience from $6.25 to $6.50/ hour; with one year of experience $6.75/hour; Lifeguards with 0-3 years experience from $6.25 to $7.50/hour; four plus years experience from $7.50-$7.75/hour and lead lifeguard from $8.25-$8.50/hour.

Whatís going on at the high school with the big hole by the building?

Superintendent Tim Eklund apprised the board on the emergency situation around the outside of the high school this spring.

Apparently when the school was built no drain tiles were placed around the foundation and it became necessary for Eklund to approve some drainage work especially with the amount of water coming off the school roof near the theater. Remedial work will be done in increments to install drain tiles leading to a catch basin to drain water away from the building, Eklund noted, especially on the south side. Visitors to the building will notice a large hole at the foundation of the theater section where work has begun.

Eklund also explained an issue that occurred on the north side of the building in early March when a frost heave caused the door to not open all the way or stick open.

He said this happens every year and is self-corrected when the frost heave goes back down.
It could be fixed, he noted, but pointed to other issues that take president, i.e. the roof.
Eklund also discussed the high school roof issue with the board last week noting that resolution may come by seeking requests for proposals (RFPs) for reroofing, with any submitted proposals being run through a reputable firm called Inspec.
He said there is the possibility of outside resources in the amount of $600,000 to cover the cost. The roof, when new, cost the district $450,000.

Eklund said the roof issue is not a matter of ìifî it will be repaired, but ìhow soon and to what extent.î

In other business, the school board:

ï Discussed letters to the building principals from the Red Cross regarding use of the school buildings as large scale disaster sites. The board, upon recommendation of the principals, agreed to allow the buildings to be used in such an emergency.

ï Accepted the resignations of Joe Nelson ñ Maintenance Custodian and Janice Hofschulte ñ Family Center Coordinator and approved the hiring of Patrick Blahnik, Custodian II and Dave Schroeder (a district transfer) ñ Maintenance Custodian.

ï Learned that the instrumental music students participating in contests April 4 all received star ratings and advance to region/state competition.
