Dance team competition arrives at NBHS this winter

The North Branch School Board voted to introduce a new dance team program to the high school activities list next winter.

During the boardís April 19 meeting it was decided the new program would host tryouts in the fall prior to the winter competitive season. The district expects anywhere from 12 to 30 high schoolers to participate.

ěIt seems like numbers should not be a problem,î high school Activities Director Becky Leuer reported.

ěMany girls are interested in this activity,î board member Kim Salo said.

Although dance team competition is not currently considered a ěsport,î board member Rick Olseen said ěthere is a movement in that directionî across Minnesota.

Salo said the program also was a good idea as it provided an additional activity for high school girls to participate in.

The board also decided to keep the winter cheerleading program on after concerns over a lack of interest in that activity had been aired in recent months. Cheerleading minimum numbers were set at 14 participants for the fall season, and 15 required participants during the winter season.
