Norlander is new president of Minnesota Newspaper Association

Dick Norlander, publisher of the Mille Lacs Messenger in Isle and the Aitkin Independent Age, Aitkin, MN, was elected president of the Minnesota Newspaper Association on Saturday, Jan. 27 at the annual meeting of the association at the Radisson Hotel South in Bloomington.

He succeeds Dennis Winskowski, publisher of the Detroit Lakes Times and Becker County Record in Detroit Lakes. Norlander is the 121st president of the Minnesota Newspaper Association.

Norlander grew up in Edina, MN, and Battle Creek, MI. A journalism graduate of the University of Michigan, Norlander also holds an MBA degree in marketing from Michigan State University.

He began his newspaper career as a carrier for the Edina Courier and later had stints writing or in management with the Battle Creek Enquirer & News, the Niles (Mich.) Daily Star, and the New Your Daily News.

Norlander was vice president of Sun Newspapers in Edina before purchasing the Mille Lacs Messenger in 1975. He was elected to the MNA Board of Directors in 1994. Previously he served on the associationís Journalism Education and Member Services committees.

In addition to his involvement in local civic and economic organizations, Norlander also served as treasurer of the Mille Lacs Health System hospital and clinics headquartered in Onamia, MN.

The Minnesota Newspaper Association is a trade organization representing 370 weekly and daily newspapers in the state. The association, which has its headquarters in Minneapolis, is observing its 134th year.
