Harris fire leaves family of six homeless

Lylen Menge, her daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren escaped injury when Mengeís home on Gates Ave. in Harris burned on one of the coldest days of 2001, Thursday, Feb. 1.

Responding to the afternoon fire were the Harris, Rush City and North Branch Fire Departments.

The family was able to get out of the house as heavy smoke filled the building and the fire took over.

The family moved into the home only last fall. Cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental.

Everything was lost, according to Mengeís daughter. One family cat died, one was rescued.

The family is staying at a North Branch motel and believes they have secured a home in the North Branch area. But they will need furnishings such as living room furniture and at least two full-sized beds, plus other household items to get them back on their feet.

Clothing is not needed at this time.
Harris Fire Chief John Pelant wishes to thank the members of the North Branch and Rush City Fire Departments for their assistance.

He also expresses gratitude to the Loose Moose coffee shop for the hot coffee provided during firefighting.

If anyone would like to help with furnishings, call the Post Review office and we will pass along your offer to the family. Our number is 651-674-7025.
