Tanger Outlets, shoppers contribute to American Cancer Society research
Although millions of shoppers visited Tanger Outlet Centers last fall to save money, they also shopped with a greater purpose in mind: to fight breast cancer.
During September and October, 2000, Tanger hosted its seventh annual Breast Cancer Awareness campaign.
Through its successful One Percent Day event, Breast Cancer Benefit Discount Booklet Sale, and through other fund-raising programs, Tangerís 29 outlet shopping centers nationwide surpassed the companyís 2000 campaign goal. More than $450,000 was raised to benefit local American Cancer Society (ACS) chapters in the communities across the nation which Tanger calls home.
North Branchís Tanger Outlet Center raised $15,794 by selling benefit discount booklets that included discounts for Tanger shoppers and a coupon from Grand Casino in Hinckley.
Tangerís donations were presented to representatives of the American Cancer Society last Thursday, Jan. 11 at the outlet center.
The ACS will be designating this money for use in Minnesota Breast Cancer Research grants at the University of Minnesota and at Rochesterís Mayo Clinic.
Tanger also purchased a ìDermaScanî machine for use by the Chisago County Public Health Department. The machine will be used in educational programs in order for residents to learn about the condition of their skin ñ and promote awareness of the damaging effects of exposure to the sun.
Additionally, last July 28, Tanger hosted a very successful Relay For Life event which helped raise $101,000 for the Chisago County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
In addition to ongoing research projects designed to find a cure for breast cancer, local ACS chapters have utilized the funds provided by Tanger for many important community-oriented programs including: Reach to Recovery, a program providing one-on-one opportunities for men and women who have been recently diagnosed with cancer.
Tangerís annual Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign reached a milestone in 2000. Since being developed by Stanley K. Tanger in 1994, the companyís program has now raised more than $1.1 million nationally for the crusade against breast cancer.
Tanger has previously attained lifelong Excalibur status, the prestigious honor the American Cancer Society confers upon companies which contribute $100,000 or more to support cancer research and education.
More than 182,000 women and 1,400 men were diagnosed with breast cancer in the year 2000, according to the ACS. Roughly 40,800 women and 400 men will die from the disease.
