Sunday Night, by MaryHelen Swanson: How can I wrap up one week when the next starts with a bang?
You know, maybe I should rename this column ìMonday Nightî because just when Iíve pulled my thoughts together on Sunday night, wrapping up one week, Monday begins with a bang and it cancels the copy that was ready for print.
Two Mondays, two storms, thereís a pattern. Two Mondays, two federal executions. Another pattern. Yesterdayís happenings donít seem all that important when the week begins with such breaking news.
Life is too unnerving when you canít pull in the anchor and sail smoothly in to port without the sea making waves before the boat gets to shore. But thatís why they call it news. The world in which we live today moves so fast we seldom have time to dwell on the past, although we certainly should from time to time.
Well, Iím going to dwell for just a few minutes. The North Branch Midsummer is over, the Rush City Fly-In is over, graduations are over, schoolís out, fishing opener, Motherís Day, Fatherís Day . . . all over.
Can somebody please slow the year.
So far, all the community events have been well done, and even with the daily sprinkles or even storm bursts, most people had a good time.
There are a lot of people to thank for all this, youíve been seeing some of their names in the letters to the editor. Itís been great, so many of you working together to have fun.
There are a few good times left this summer, which actually hasnít even started as of this printing, including the 4th of July celebrations, the Chisago County Relay for Life walks, and of course, the Chisago County Fair.
Throw in a few lazy days in a boat or on a beach, basking in your backyard or puttsing in your garden and this will go down as a fine season. Now if Mondays would only settle down and behave themselves, I might just be able to write my Sunday Night column only once a week.
On a more serious note, my sympathies go out to the families of those who died in Mondayís tornado and to all who lost personal property, especially their entire homes or businesses. If this wild weather is going to keep up, please refresh yourself on what to do in such emergencies.
