Nessel votes to change election month making it only township in state to do so

Nessel Township residents set a president by voting last Tuesday 137-86 to change the month of the annual township election from the traditional March to November to coincide with the general elections.

This will mean that supervisors will be elected for four -year terms instead of the current three. The annual township meeting, will, however, still be conducted on the second Tuesday of March along with all other townships.

Nessel Township voters also responded to the question of building a new shop/garage and making improvements at the current shop to comply with OSHA standards.

On this vote, the residents rejected the proposal 143-81.

At the annual meeting, however, which immediately followed the election that day, the residents made another decision that had some town board officials confused.

They voted in favor of an additional $35,000 levy each year for five years to finance the new shop/garage building they had just rejected.
In other election activity in Nessel Township, Jerry Beise was returned as supervisor with 126 votes against Jim Martinís 93, and Treasurer Ron Hauglie, running unopposed, received 179 votes. Millie Peters received 17 write-in votes for treasurer.

In Oxford Township, Robert Keocherís 30-years of service came to an end as he did not run for reelection. Two candidates had filed for the position, Darren Lemmerman and Stephen Forner, but it was Harlan Bellin who won the supervisorís position with 60 write-in votes over Fornerís 27 and Lemmermanís seven. Peggy Nelson was reelected to the position of treasurer.

No changes in Rushseba Township with Jon Moulton retaining his supervisor seat and Rodney Swanson the treasurerís position.

Running a successful campaign in Fish Lake Township was Bob Cupit who took 153 votes over Elvin Norlingís 25, Mark Crabtreeís 24 and Norman Reinhardtís 16. Cupit takes over for Orville Anderson who served on the town board for 40 years.
Sharon McAndrew was elected treasurer in Fish Lake Township.

No changes in North Branch Township either with Dale Nordaune retaining his seat as treasurer and Robert Schmidt as supervisor.

In Sunrise Township, it was Lyle Thomsen staying on as supervisor and Susie Knickerbocker as treasurer. Delano Olson and Jeff Shane were appointed to the planning commission.
