North Branch speech team takes second in RRC

The North Branch High School speech team took second place at the Rum River Conference Tournament March 13, finishing just 22 points behind first place Chisago Lakes.

Coach Betsy Carpenter said she was pleasantly surprised with the second place finish after going in with expectations no higher than third or fourth place.
Individual conference champions included Matt Wheeler in discussion, and Evan Boyce drama.

Second place finishers included Melissa Eberlein in great speeches, and Kim Koski in the category of original oratory.

Third place medals went to Char Roethler in creative expression, Amy Bauernfeind in informative, Bridget Bergstrom in great speeches, and Anna Thomsen in serious prose.

Fourth place winners were Candice Lunzer, humorous; Rachel Johnson, individual oratory. Sara Waldron took fifth place in extemporaneous reading.
Sixth place medal winners included Courtney Funke, extemporaneous reading; Brandon Turner, great speeches; and Emily Gjertson, creative expression.

Other participants were Amanda Abress, Samantha Anderson, Ariel Becker, Justine Benson, Sarah Bibeau, Matt Born, Sam Dehn, Anna Driscoll, Emily Ewald, Nicole Granberg, Fletch Helle, Ben McAuliffe, Matt McAuliffe, Justin McLinn, Brian Meskimen, Sarah Morrison, Cory Mueller, Katie Ryder, Nicole Swanson, Amber Turner, Amber Wald, Geoff Watson and Danielle Wilkerson.
Upcoming meets include the sub-sectional competition at St. Francis High School on March 31.

Section competition is set for April 7 at Virginia High School. The state tournament is April 20.
