Harris antique store begins second season
By Danielle Strenke
Loralee Popehn is excited about beginning her second season as the owner and operator of American Dreams Antiques and Garden Gear, just outside of Stark.
She and her husband, Ralph, have been interested in antiques for many years, she says. After Ralph operated an antique store in the metro area, the two moved north to a picturesque farm three miles west of Stark on Stark Rd. (Co Rd. 10), or five miles west of Harris.
There, they built a cottage which last year opened as American Dreams Antiques and Garden Gear. Popehn prides herself on the business offering only quality antiques, many of them refurbished and refinished by herself and Ralph, who owns a refinishing business himself.
Many of the items they sell, Popehn said, were found at auctions. ìWe search for quality items, which are becoming harder and harder to come by,î she said.
Much of the antique store is filled with solid wood furniture, such as dressers, hutches, and cabinets. There are antique collectibles as well, but nothing that doesnít look well-kept. ìWe try to stay away from the garage-sale stuff,î Popehn said. She also has an area of the shop for new gardening items, such as pots and garden tools.
American Dreams is a seasonal business, open May through September. Popehn just opened up shop for the year last week.
She said business during her first season was good, and sheís hopeful the word will spread about the quality and uniqueness of the items at her shop.
American Dreams is located at 330 Stark Road. Popehn doesnít operate under regular hours, but says people are welcome to stop by during most days. If coming from a distance, however, she suggests calling ahead to see if theyíre open. The phone is 763-689-4889.
