NBHS students brave the Sunrise: ëFloatí trip down the winding river yields scientific findings, frequent portages, bug bites

Members of the first-ever Sunrise Expeditionary Force, muddy and mosquito-bitten, returned to North Branch May 18 after initiating their three-day ëfloatí down the river at Weber May 16.

Project coordinator Tom Anderson said the expedition, designed to gather scientific insight into the riverís chemistry and health, was a great success in terms of information gathered and fun had. He hopes to secure funding to make the trip an annual event for North Branch High School nature enthusiasts.

Anderson said the group spent practically as much time portaging their canoes over fallen trees (or cutting their way through them) as they spent in the canoes making forward progress. The bugs were also a distraction at times.
