State Auditor gives Harris chance to collect aid from 1999

By Danielle Strenke

The State Auditorís office sent a correspondence to the city of Harris last week, advising Mayor Richard Hanson and the city council that the city had failed to submit financial information on a timely basis to receive Local Government Aid for 1999.

Mayor Hanson reviewed the letter at the councilís meeting Monday, saying that the good news is the state is willing to consider giving Harris the LGA aid for 1999 and 2000, if both yearís financial data is submitted by May 30.

Financial information was due by March 31, 2000 for the fiscal year 1999. However, Harris did not submit the information until December 2000.

The letter also states that a review shows ìa pattern of untimely reporting by the City of Harrisî, and that records for 1997 and 1998 were also submitted late.

Mayor Hanson assured the council that the appropriate financial information would be submitted by the deadline, to ensure that Harris still qualifies for the LGA for 1999 and 2000.

If the city is unable to meet the deadline, it could lose $47,639 in aid for 1999.
