The new day of infamy

By Brian Meskimen
We have all no doubt been affected by the horrible terrorist attacks that were made against our country this past Tuesday. ÝSeptember 11, 2001 will be forever burned into our minds; we will remember where we were, who we were with, and what we were doing. Everyone in our community and our great nation has been affected by this tragedy in one way or another and none of us will ever be the same.
But how have the youth of our community responded to this situation? As with the rest of the nation their hearts have gone out to those in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. ÝMost of the students at North Branch High School had just began class when they found out about what was happening a thousand miles away. Ý
When asked what their first reaction was one junior said she just felt ěsheer shock,î while a senior said she ějust couldnít believe what was happening.î ÝThat is the feeling that one gets from all the students at NBHS; it is just unbelievable.
President Bush has vowed to seek revenge on the terrorists who have committed this act of war and crime against humanity. ÝWith a coalition of much of the free world behind us and more countries joining the fight against terrorism every day, war seems eminent. Ý
A majority of the students at NBHS seem to think we may go to war on some level, and most who say so support it. ÝOne student said she would support the United States going to war, but that she was ěscared as all hell.î ÝOthers have said they donít think we will go to war or that they wouldnít support it.
Even though we are a thousand miles away students say there are still things we can do to help those in need. The biggest thing needed right now is money donations to the Red Cross. ÝThe cost of this disaster will reach well into the billions, even after at least 40 billion dollars from the government, so any donations will be of some help. Ý
While the need for blood donations has decreased with the recent outpour of generous people wanting to save precious lives, there are still other things that can be done. Ý
Things as simple as flying our flag or just expressing support can be helpful. ÝJust a week ago the American flag to many of us didnít mean all that much, but now it brings pride into every American's heart.
Through all of this a lot of students donít think the typical American way of life will change in the long run, in spite of all this. Things may change for a little while, but things will go back to normal eventually say some students. No matter what changes or what else happens, one thing is for sure, our great nation has come together and we will get through this; we will survive.
