NB superintendent cites mixed messages at city council meeting

To the editor:

There is apparent confusion about the position of the North Branch Area School District regarding the growing population of our area. Quotes attributed to school officials in the last edition of the Post Review suggest that our schools can handle additional students within our current facilities. Although I know that statements can be taken out of context or spoken words can have different meanings when put in print, the statement as printed is inconsistent with our current situation. It is important that our position on these matters is clear to the public.
While it is true that we, by law, have to handle all new students who move into our district, it is not true that we can do so without additional stress to our overcrowded schools. This should be obvious to all since the District will again be asking voters in November to approve funding for a new building.
The School District, along with our cities and townships, must address difficult issues in the face of strong growth. We will continue to explain our options to the voters in as straightforward and honest a fashion as possible.
Sincerely,
Dr. Robert Stepaniak
Superintendent
