Fatality on I-35

The East Metro Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that occurred about 2:45 p.m. Sunday, April 7 on I-35 just north of the Wyoming exit.

James Duerr, 45, of La Crosse, Wisc., was southbound in a 1985 Toyota on I-35 and crossed the grassy median sideswiping a 1996 Pontiac driven by Natasha Leis, 19, of Osceola, Wisc. She and a passenger, 20-year-old Shannon Brown of Superior, Wisc., received minor injuries.

When Duerrís car sideswiped Leisís vehicle, it bounced into the path of a 1995 Nissan driven by Kyle Bennett, 23, of Wyoming, hitting head on.
Bennett sustained injuries and was transported to St. Paul Regions Hospital.

The Leis vehicle bounced off a fourth car, a 1999 Pontiac driven by Steven Nyberg, 52, of Savage, Minn. Nyberg was not injured.

Duerr was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident held up traffic on the freeway for several hours.
