Gladys Viola Martin
Gladys Viola Martin of Rush City died at the age of 90 years and six days on April 13, 2002 at the Cambridge Medical Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday April 16, 2002 at the First Lutheran Church of Rush City with Revs. Laurie OÇShea & Lee Reinsch officiating. Music was provided by GladysÇ great granddaughters; Randi & Brittany Olson with Dianne Kirchberg as organist. Casket Bearers included six of GladysÇgrandsons; Dennis Olson, Rocky Bodell, Scott Nowling, Mike Nowling, Allan Nowling and Danny Nowling with her granddaughter Cindy Bodell acting as an Honorary Casket Bearer. Interment was in the Birchwood Cemetery in Pine City. Funeral arrangements were made by the Olson Funeral Chapel of Rush City. In her lifetime she overcame cancer, heart by-pass, strokes and the loss of two sons and still fulfilled her life with her family. She was born April 7, 1912 in Arlington, Iowa. At the age of eleven she moved to rural Brook Park to help her grand-father on the Seedorff farm. The rest of her family joined her in Brook Park a year later. In January of 1927 at the age of 15, she married Leslie Nowling and is lovingly survived by their children Donnie, Audrey and LaVon. She is preceded in death by her sons Vern and Carl. In August of 1947 Gladys and Earl Bervig were united in marriage. She is survived by their son Jim. Earl preceded her in death in 1963. In March of 1971 Gladys married Bob Martin and helped to raise his daughter Laura Martin-Vouk. Bob preceded her in death in 1992. Besides being an exceptional mother she held numerous jobs including the New Brighton Arsenal, Awning Factory, Atscott in Pine City and working at her daughters day-care in Rush City, which she retired from at age of 84. Gladys loved to cook and bake; entertaining her friends and relatives with well prepared meals. Another passion for Gladys was flower gardening. She had beautiful flower gardens around her homes which to this day are still productive! She is preceded in death by her parents Gus and May (Seedorf) Anderman, husbands Leslie Nowling, Earl Bergvig, Bob Martin, two sons Vern and Carl Nowling, grandson Steven Nowling, great-grandson David Fogelberg and brother Leo Anderman. Surviving Gladys are her four children, Don (Charline) Nowling of Grasston, Audrey (Rabs) Anderson of Rush City, LaVon (Ken) Corey of Lewistown, Montana, Jim Bergvig of Rush City, step-daughter Laura Vouk of Isanti, 29 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren,15 great-great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Sally Nowling of Pine City and Doreen Grave of Mankato, sister Ruth Prochaska of Cambridge, brothers Carl (Florence) Anderman of Sandstone, LeRoy (Phyllis) Davidson of Lindstrom, many nieces & nephews. Gladys was loved by all for her positive attitude and outlook! She will be greatly missed by her family and extended family!!
