Girls team sets standard in strong
conference play

Last week, the nice weather made for a perfect setting as the Vikings girls golf team was narrowly edged out of first place at a Rum River Conference meet Wednesday, and came back to capture first in another conference meet at home Thursday.

With little or no wind and temperatures in the 60s, the squad opened its season at Pine City April 17, competing against Chisago Lakes, Pine City and Mora.

The team was led by senior Aino Lange, an exchange student from Finland, who also led the field with a spectacular round of 38. The rest of the team also had solid finishes. Sophomore Sara Schwalbe came in with a 55, sophomore Hanna Lindberg finished with a 59 and Rachel White completed the round with 61.

The team finished the round with 213. Chisago Lakes took first at the meet with 207.

Head coach Dave Ambers said the course was wet, as is typical for an early spring meet, and the greens were slow.

ìMost of the kids had trouble adjusting to the slow greens,î he said.

ìIt didnít seem to bother Aino, though. She said she likes the greens that way.î

The squad improved by 12 strokes the following day, taking first at a home meet Thursday, with a total of 201.

Lange repeated her round results at Thursdayís meet, coming away as the medal winner with 38. White and Lindberg tied with 53, and Schwalbe turned in 57.

In team scoring, Chisago Lakes and Pine City tied for second with 220, while Mora did not have a complete team.

Ambers said the conditions for play were much better at the North Branch Golf Course. ìThe grounds crew had the course in exceptional condition for this early in the season,î he said.

Despite changes in the climate that day, the Vikings girls persevered. ìAino continues to play outstanding,î Ambers said. ìHanna and Rachel played much better, and both finished in the top five. Sara was a steady player as always, which is so important.î
