Academic Triathlon challenged students to think quickly

By Barbara Brown

Jacobson Elementary School was all abuzz last Wednesday and Thursday when 28 second- and third-graders were challenged to the Academic Triathlon to test their quick-thinking skills.

The students were selected by their teachers to compete.

Several rounds of competition ultimately led one of the four seven-member teams to victory.

Two teams were pitted against each other in a ěJeopardyî style round that required a team to buzz-in if the group knew the answer to questions pertaining to giving change, names of clouds, slang speech, president names, math, English and geography.

A second round was the bean-bag relays where each student was required to come up with as many innovative things he or she could do with a plastic bag full of dried beans.

The game rounds that required the students to use their imagination and pretend the beans were their normal size or enormous.

A third challenge presented the teams with a fill-in-the-blank game.

The proctor presented two phrases in which the letters were replaced with blank spaces with numbers underneath.

The students picked several letters they wanted revealed and cards were given listing the numbered spaces where those letters belonged.

After eight minutes the team was supposed to use reasonable deduction to come up with the correct phrase.

The two day event challenged the students minds and concentration.

The students all worked well together and were determined to put their best efforts forward to claim the title of the quickest-thinking team in school.

After both days, the team of Chelsea Chilson, Chelsey Groshens, Brooke Hein, Lucas Lindgren, Matt Strenke, Emili Tischer and Nathan Wendof came out in first.

The second place team was not far behind. It was made up of Jordyn Churchsmith, Zac Colton, Stephanie Guentzel, Jacob Hoiem, Lindsey Kuhlman, Nick Shoemaker and Tyler Tischer.

The team of Sarah Behrendt, Heather Herberg, Becky Johnson, Wyatt Kleinsasser, Jeff Lofgren, Ronny Nitti and Trista Sarago came in third.

In fourth place was the team of Sophie Bossart, Katie Drinnin, Lincoln Kirchoff, Kaylie Odegard, Heidi Ringer, Zach Smith and Julia Westman.
