Lorna Hayer

Lorna Hayer, age 87, formerly of Garfield, died Thursday, March 28, 2002 at Crestview Manor in Evansville, Minn.

A funeral service was held on April 2, 2002 at the St. Lukeís Lutheran Church with Rev. David Gran and Rev. Harold Knutson officiating. Diane Alveshere was the organist, and Brian Hayer, and Jessica Magness were the soloists.

Interment was in Union Cemetery in Elbow Lake. Pallbearers were Brian Hayer, Kevin Hayer, Denise Magness, Mark Magness, Dawn Johanson, Ronald Johanson, Edward Thorson Sr., and Charles Brown.

Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home.

Lorna was born on Sept. 18, 1914, in Pomme de Terre Township, Grant County, Minn. to Charles and Annie (Sauby) Brown. Lorna married Howard Hayer on Oct. 7, 1933. To them, Harlene and Harold were born.

During sixty-two years of marriage, they made their home in Elbow Lake and Herman, Minn. They moved on to Seattle, Washington for a while and then back to Minnesota to a farm near Staples; Alexandria and Minneapolis. Lorna began working retail at Woolworthís in Alexandria. She also worked for Daytonís in Minneapolis for eighteen years.

She retired in 1976 and the couple moved to Garfield. In her retirement, she enjoyed gardening, volunteering at St. Lukeís Lutheran Church and Garfieldís Senior Citizens. She also enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Howardís illness was hard on her. Howard died on March 12, 1996.

Lorna is survived by her son Harold (June) Hayer of Fargo, ND; daughter Harlene Watland of Harris, Minn.; grandchildren: Kevin (Brenda) Hayer of Fargo, ND, Brian Hayer of Fargo, ND, Denise (Mark) Magness of Fargo, ND, and Dawn (Ronald) Johanson of Harris, Minn.; great grandchildren: Matthew and Amanda Johanson, and Jessica and Jacob Magness, and Paige, Kadie, Sara, Hayer, Rudy and Eden Hayer, and nieces and nephews. Lorna was preceded in death by her parents; husband Howard Hayer; brothers: Clifton and Omar Brown; sisters: Elaine Thompson, Amy Frigaard, Claudia Hartwig and Mildred Pingrey.

Lornaís family and friends, neighbors and co-workers enjoyed her competence, her sense of humor and her good cooking. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her special delight.

We thank and praise God for his servant Lorna, and for the many friends and caregivers these last years of Lornaís failing health. Especially faithful have been the Thorsons ñ Ed, Sandy, and the late Gladys, as well as Pastor Dave and Ann Gran and Pastor Harold and Darline Knutson.
