Let the relay countdown begin - 2002 Relay for Life set for July 26 in North Branch

By MaryHelen Swanson
If you participated in the 2001 Relay for Life event in North Branch, perhaps your clothes and umbrellas have finally dried out. Wasnít that a drencher?

Everything was wet but the spirits of the hardy souls who walked on and on into the night in the pouring rain.

Well, since nothing can seem to get you wonderful folks down, hereís the announcement youíve all been waiting for - itís time for the Team Captain Kickoff meeting for the 2002 Relay for Life. This yearís event is set for July 26-27.

According to Relay chairwoman Sharon Gallagher, checks have already been donated for this yearís event.

Thatís what spurred her to get going and organize this kickoff meeting.

Last year 53 teams participated raising well over $100,000.

In fact, Gallagher has tallied the total for the Relayís four-year run in North Branch and it comes to over $317,000.

She noted that the money is used in our communities for research and education, advocacy and programs for people touched by cancer.

The kickoff meeting will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 17 at OíFudge Deli & Coffee at Tanger Outlet Center.

Team captains, including new teams just formed this year, will meet the Relay for Life committee, review Relay events and program, review Relay standards and Bank Night, receive a Team Captain Packet, member envelopes and luminary bags, receive member recruiting and fund raising tips and review the 2002 incentives and t-shirt fee.

If you are unable to attend, you can pick up your Team Captain packet at the Tanger Outlet Center mall office. If you have questions regarding the Relay or the kickoff meeting, please give Sharon Gallagher a call at 674-5886.

What is a Relay for Life?

A Relay for Life is a
unique community event that allows individuals from all walks of life to join in the fight against cancer. Teams form from businesses, clubs,
families, friends, hospitals, churches, schools and service organizations. During the 12-hour event, a representative from each team is always
out on the track walking, jogging or running.

Itís all about community and coming together
to achieve a common goal - the elimination of cancer.
