North Branch teen sinks hole-in-one at golf course
By Barbara Brown Marty Savage broke the rules at North Branch Golf Course earlier this month, but he was too excited to care. When Marty, 14, his father Mark and family friend Ron Trunk went to the course to take in nine holes Aug. 1, Marty had no idea he would raise his voice on the course. But hole six brought a surprise that made Marty and the two other golfers jump and scream for joy. Marty got a hole-in-one. ìWe were screaming and yelling,î he said in a phone interview last week. ìWe were jumping up and down. We didnít really care.î From 170 yards out, Marty chose a five iron for his tee shot, expecting to simply make it to the green. ìMy dad and (Ron) were using five irons, so I just thought Iíd use the same one,î Marty said. His aim was right on the money and the ball landed cleanly in the hole. Marty said he could see the pin from the tee box and could hardly believe his eyes when the ball dropped below ground level into the cup. ìI knew it right away,î he said. Marty said it was useless to concentrate on the last three holes. ìThey just went downhill,î he said. ìThey were really bad, but I didnít care.î Marty said he started golfing about two years ago when his brother worked at the course. It wasnít Tiger Woods who inspired Marty, he said, it was his brother talking about the course and game of golf when he got home from a hard day on the greens.
