City rents old fire hall to cloggers

By Danielle Strenke
The Harris City Council voted to allow a clogging instruction class to utilize space in the old fire hall at its Dec. 5 meeting.
The space vacated by the fire department adjacent to the city hall has been used for several food giveaways in the past, and is primarily used partially as storage for old city records.
The council received a request by former councilor Marlys Cleveland to conduct weekly clogging classes in the empty space.
Council members discussed the option of allowing classes in the space.
ìIf we allow it, should someone be present for supervision of our stored items?î Mayor Richard Hanson asked.
Harris City Attorney Kevin Shoeberg said that was up to the council, but he did receive notice from Cleveland that she was fully insured for coverage during the classes.
He said the classes were scheduled for Wednesday nights through the winter months, so the time and date would not conflict with any city meetings.
ìMy concern is who will let them in, will somebody stay here while the classes are going on, thatís more of a risk,î Shoeberg said.
Councilor Wayne Buisman and Hanson said they could both be available to come and open up the doors and return to lock up after the classes were finished each week.
Use of the space was approved, provided insurance information is given before classes start.
The city was approached in June 2000 about the option of renting out the space, but the idea was never formalized.
At the time, the council also debated whether it was feasible to allow for space in the new fire hall to be rented for classes and activities, but found it would not be feasible to allow it in a building used for emergency services.
The class will bring $400 in rental fees to the city, which could bring another area of revenue to the city, Shoeberg said of renting the space.
