Wrestlers rack up points

North Branch wrestlers rolled over Chisago Lakes Dec. 3, beating the Wildcats 51-21 on their own mats.
North Branch and Chisago Lakes both forfeited the 103 match, and North Branch started the scoring in the 112 match when Chisago Lakes forfeited to Jeff Holmgren.
At 119, Josh Schwab won by forfeit.
The first match of the night was John Buchananís at 125 where he won by decision.
In Joe Lofboomís 130 match, which he won by decision, a shoulder injury forced him to be out for the remainder of the season.
Weights 135, 145 and 152 all were won by North Branch through forfeits.
Vince Zaffke, 140; and Josh Villella, 160, both won by decision and Sam Suparat, 171, pinned his opponent.
ìChisago was short-handed tonight,î said coach Tony Aho, ìyet they wrestled their hearts out.î
North Branch took a serious blow during the opening round of the Monticello Tournament when the Vikings were pitted against Hutchinson. The team took a tough 58-98 loss, with only Nate Rundhaug, 135, winning by fall and Jeremy Bergerson, 275 winning by decision.
Round 2 ended with North Branch eking out a 42-36 win over Annandale-Maple Lake. Holmgren, Buchanan, Villella, Suparat, Meier, Bill Oehlers (215) and Bergerson all won their matches.
In the New Ulm/North Branch match in Round 3, Holmgren, Buchanan, Joe Holmgren, Villella, and Bergerson all took wins.
Round 4 brought another big win for the Vikings, who romped Sauk Rapids 57-12.
Holmgren, Buchanan, Joe Holmgren, Villella, Suparat and Bergerson all won by falls and Derek Turnblad, 145; and Meier took forfeits for points. James Kvale, 189, won by decision.
Bergerson earned accolades by going 4-0 on the day.
ìThis was an up-and-down day for us,î Aho said. ìOverall, the boys tried very hard and deserve a lot of respect.î
