Tiger girls basketball keeps winning
Record improves to 4-0

The Rush City girls basketball squad is off to its best start in several years after picking up two more wins last week to improve to a perfect 4-0 on the year.
The Tigers defeated Hinckley-Finlayson Dec. 10 and Onamia Dec. 13 to extend its win streak to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Great River Conference.
Against Hinckley, sophomore Holly Grimes led the team with 20 points in a 55-40 victory. Grimes was also 8 of 10 at the line.
Rush City trailed 6-4 after one quarter but rallied to take the 22-19 lead at the half, scoring 18 points in the second quarter.
Junior Ashley Stanley contributed 8 of the second quarter points to open up the stanza.
Building on a 35-31 lead going into the fourth quarter, the Tigers went on an offensive tirade and racked up 20 points while holding the Jaguars to only 9 in the final quarter for the 55-40 win.
Head coach Stuart Lang said the team was ready for a tough battle with Hinckley.
ìWe knew going in that Hinckley-Finlayson was a good team, and going on the road to defeat them was a big confidence booster for the team,î he said.
The team played great defense, coming up with 10 steals and 24 defensive rebounds.
Grimes led with 20 points, followed by senior Jess Prettner with 14 points, including going 2 for 2 in 3-point attempts.
Overall, the team improved its field-goal shots to nearly 38 percent and free throws to 75 percent.
The Tigers tallied 6 of 10 3-pointers for 60 percent.
Another win last Friday came against Onamia, as the Tigers scored steadily throughout the game and came out with a 20-point win, 44-24.
Rush City took an early lead, ending the first with an 11-8 lead and then expanding it to 25-12 at the half by scoring 14 in the second and holding the Panthers to only 4 points in the stanza.
Lang was pleased with how the team came out and took the lead, and consistently built on the lead every quarter.
Onamia was held to single digits in the third and fourth quarters as well, notching only 6 points in each as Rush City came away with the 44-24 win.
ìWith every game we are getting better and better on defense,î Lang said. ìOur players are starting to understand what it takes.î
Junior Mindy Scott led the team offensively with 14 points, going 4 for 6 behind the arc.
Nine other players scored for the Tigers as they pick up more experience and confidence at the varsity level.
Junior Christine Moore continued to lead the teamís defense by shutting down a strong Onamia point guard throughout the game.
The Tigers hoped to continue the win streak Tuesday on the road against Isle.
The team returns home Thursday, Dec. 19 to take on Frederic in a non-conference game, rounding out its schedule before the holiday break.
