Sunday Night
MaryHelen Swanson, editor

Tíis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
The shops and the businesses have finally shut down.
The lights on the windows hang calm in the air,
Shining over the streets that are finally bare.
The shoppers, they shopped till the very last hour,
With VISAs and bank cards, it was credit card power.
Now the gifts are all wrapped, the turkey is roasted,
The holiday parties have already been hosted.
Our mayors are snuggled up in their beds,
With visions of budgets floating round in their heads.
And out in the country, where roads turn to lanes,
The boards and committees have settled their brains.
The levies are set, and no more can be done,
So itís time to relax and have holiday fun.
Go out on the lawn; see a star shining bright,
And youíll know weíve arrived on this wonderful night.
As wild geese fly over your homes Christmas Eve,
Remember in Santa you used to believe.
Think of how you excitedly waited each year,
For the man in cerise and his tiny reindeer.
Watch the kidsí eyes twinkle as they open with glee,
Those high tech electronics under the tree.
Kiss a rosy red cheek under mistletoe hung,
And join in the carols that have always been sung.
With luck weíll have snow falling down from the sky,
And skiers will have a bright gleam in their eye.
Then take a few minutes to speak not a word,
Itís a magical night of glory, weíve heard,
When the stockings are full and the tummies are too,
Think how you are blessed, your family and you.
And savor the moments of sweet peace on the earth,
And remember it started with one special birth.
Hold fast to the love and the joy that you find,
When everyone smiles and everyoneís kind.
I heard someone exclaim, perhaps I am right,
That this peace that we find on this one lovely night,
Should last through the year and our world would be great.
Why not start tomorrow, why should we wait?
Now Iím taking my finger off of the mouse,
And sending this message to each readerís house,
Have a good time with your family and friends,
I pray that the joy of this day never ends.
And though the time out from the world is too brief,
A holiday break is a welcome relief.

Merry Christmas everyone!
