Pine City squeaks by RC

In the Thursday night Rush City boys basketball game at Pine City, the teams were pretty evenly matched, but Pine City came out ahead.
The non-conference match-up left the Tigers burned by the Dragons 57-54.
Rush Cityís offense started out at a drag in the first quarter, putting down only 5 to Pine Cityís 16.
Pine City lost its touch a little in the second period and Rush City regained some composure to sink 11 to PCís 10.
At the half, the Tigers were at a 26-16 deficit, but the third quarter brought a renewed strength to the squad as it went to match Pine City point-for-point by the end of the third quarter.
Both teams scored 14 in the third, pushing the board tally to 40-30.
Rush City finally found its energy offensively and defensively in the fourth to blow away the Dragons on a 19-6 point spread to secure the win.
Or so they thought
The Dragons answered back with a three-point swish with 22 left in the game to tie the score, 49-49, and force the game into overtime.
Pine Cityís stamina came through as the Dragons scored 8 to Rush Cityís 4 in the overtime period to win the game 57-53.
After the team warmed up in the first quarter, it was a hard-fought battle, said head coach Gary Dreissig.
ìWe had a super come-back after being down by 10 to start the fourth quarter,î Dreissig said.
ìItís too bad we dug such a hole for ourselves with cold shooting in the first half.î
The loss takes the Tigers to 1-1 in the Great River Conference and 3-4 overall.
The team hosts two others when they return from the holiday break. Onamia will walk onto the Tiger court Jan. 3 and Aitkin will visit Rush City Jan. 7.
