Tigers win six tough matches against Braham

By Barbara Brown
Donít let the final score of the Dec. 17 Rush City-Braham wrestling match send the wrong impression.
Although the Tigers fell to the Bombers 39-23, Rush City gave their rivals one heck of a ride.
The Tigers won six matches to the Bombers seven wins. The difference was made because Braham took down more pins.
One of the hottest matches of the night was at 112 with freshman Richard Marohn facing state tournament entrant Dennis Gregerson, a Braham senior.
Marohn had not beaten Gregerson in past matches and was determined to make the first strong impression, which he did by scoring the only points of the first period with a take-down.
Gregerson pulled off a reversal in the second period, earning the only points in that period.
Marohn took a chance at taking the down position in the third period, but showed his power by taking an escape and a quick take-down to finish the match, beating Gregerson 5-2.
The best come-back story of the night had to go to Tiger junior Scott Englund, 160, who was down 5-2 after the first period and looked like his opponent senior Josh Triplett could get the best of him.
Englund stole the second period, racking up 7 points in the second to Triplettís 3, leaving the score at 9-8.
Englund held off Triplett in the third by starting in the down position and never going to his back to win the match.
In the 145 match, Tiger freshman MacKenzie Johnston took the mat to face senior Donald Neville.
Johnston was down 2-1 after the first period and seemed to be a little shaken by Nevilleís gruff behavior and rough-play tactics, but he composed himself and came back to match points in the second period 4-4 in the second period.
Johnston took the down position in the third period and fought through Nevilleís tight hold to earn a reversal for 2 points and the 7-6 win.
Junior Zach Sowman, 135, took the mat to defeat junior Kyle Fuhol in a 15-2 romp, earning 4 points for the team.
Rush City junior Mike Wuorinen, 171, beat Braham senior Joe Messer in a 10-1 rout that Messer had not chance in. Wuorinen battled stalling by Messer, but continued to score points throughout.
Robert Lind, Rush Cityís 215 wrestler, earned big points when he took down Braham varsity new-comer Jason Neville with a pin in 3:35.
