Join in Souper Bowl of Caring
To the editor: Itís that time of year again, Souper Bowl of Caring will be Jan. 26, 2003. This is an opportunity for churches to keep our food shelves full and help another charity of their choice. Two birds with one stone. If you arenít already involved in this ministry, please make some plans to do so as there is still time. Itís a simple activity and your youth groups can easily take responsibility for this. It began with a single youth group in 1990 when a play on words got it going. ěAs we enjoy the Super Bowl, letís be mindful of those who donít even have a bowl of soup.î The youth picked up on it and took advantage of all the hype that goes with the annual Super Bowl football game. That year, 22 churches became involved and $5,700 was raised for charity. January 2002 saw 10,000 congregations involved and $3.1 million was raised; Minnesota churches raised $92,084. Here is all you do: on Super Bowl Sunday, ask each member (of your congregation) to contribute one dollar and one staple grocery item. You deliver the groceries to your local food shelf. The dollars collected got to the mission of your choice, as long as it leaves your church. On Super Bowl Sunday, your only obligation is to report your totals to the Souper Bowl of Caring by either going online at www.souperbowl.org or by toll free telephone at 1-800-358-SOUP. There is a lot of information on their Web site. There has never been a simpler way to help our neighbor. There are no strings attached and the money and food can remain in your community. Be a part of something big that is getting bigger. Spread the word to your friends and families in other churches. One dollar or one person canít always make a difference, but itís amazing what we can do together. Jackie Larson North Branch
