Nienow gets assigments
State Senator-elect Sean Nienow (R-Cambridge) recently received committee assignments for his freshman term in the Minnesota Senate. Nienow will serve on the Health and Family Security; Environment and Natural Resources; and Agriculture, General Legislation and Veterans Affairs policy committees. ìIím very pleased with my assignments,î said Senator Nienow. ìI intend to be a strong, effective advocate for the issues that are important to our district by securing and multiplying good jobs for our families, reforming Minnesotaís health care and long-term care systems, addressing our districtís transportation needs and improving education. ìServing on those committees will give me the opportunity to tackle many of these issues head on and make a positive impact during my first term in the Minnesota Senate.î Nienow and his colleagues in the Legislature will have their work cut out for them when the 2003 legislative session convenes in January. A state budget forecast released in November projected a deficit of $356 million for the current biennium and $4.2 billion for the 2004-05 biennium. Balancing the stateís books is expected to be the legislatureís primary focus at the capitol next year. ìThere are no easy fixes for the shortfall,î said Nienow. ìBut I think we have a once in a lifetime chance to make a real difference. I am looking forward to asking tough questions, digging deep into the state budget and finding ways to reduce government waste, rather than simply raising taxes and taking more out of the family paycheck.î ìWeíre going to have to take a good look at how the state does business, find ways to deliver services more efficiently and effectively, and ensure that state government can live within its means in the future. Itís a difficult task, but I believe we have the right leadership in place in the governorís office and in the Legislature to really overhaul our state government.î Nienow was elected to his first term in the Minnesota Senate this year in the newly reconfigured Senate District 17, which encompasses all of Chisago County and most of Isanti county, including the cities of Cambridge, Isanti, North Branch, Taylors Falls, Wyoming and St. Francis (Anoka County). Nienowís term begins after he is officially sworn in at a Capitol ceremony on Jan. 7, 2003. Sen.-elect Nienow welcomes comments and questions, and can be reached by telephone at (763) 689-1623 or by mail at 155 State Office Building, 100 Constitution Ave., St. Paul, MN 55155.
