Vikings girls fall to Washburn 56-53
The North Branch girls basketball team lost a tough non-conference game at Minneapolis last week when they faced Washburn and lost in a close 56-53 game. ìWe knew it would be a tough test,î said head coach Dan Schindler. ìThey (Washburn) have been rated as high as No. 3 in the state in some publications. The lady Vikings took an early 6-4 lead but trailed 14-10 after one quarter. The second quarter saw both teams get into foul trouble and most of the quarter was played from the free throw line. Washburn was able to extend its lead to 35-23 at half-time. ìWe felt at halftime that if we could keep them off the line and get us back there, we could make a comeback,î Schindler said. The Vikings put Washburn into foul trouble because of the full-court pressure defense Washburn plays, he said. Washburn extended the lead early in the third quarter before the North Branch girls came storming back. Working against senior Traci Reimannís foul trouble throughout the game, the Vikings came back to make a run at Washburn late in the third quarter and Schindler said both Reimann and Rauna Dallman played well. Dallman scored 19 points and had 7 steals, Christina Sampson had 10 points and 6 rebounds, Katie Hasleiet scored 2 for the team. Sarah Rauen had 6 points and 7 rebounds. Reimann brought in 6for the Vikes while Jenny Anderson racked up 8 points. Rachel Brown added to the effort with 2 points. North Branch now is 1-1 this season. The team next faces Mora on the Mustang court.
