Tigersí girls hoops snatches win from Lionsí clutches

By Danielle Strenke

The Rush City girls basketball squad started the game looking a little lackluster, came out with renewed energy in the second half, and challenged Ogilvie to go away with a win on the Tigers home court.

In a fourth quarter that see-sawed back and forth down to the final minute, the Lions managed to snatch a 42-36 victory away from the Tigers.

Despite the final score, Rush City kept it close throughout the second half, succumbing only to shots made by Ogilvie at the free throw line, after the Tigers were forced to foul.

Rush City started slowly in the first, scoring their only basket near the end of the first quarter, off the hands of Shawna Werner. They trailed 8-2 going into the second.

In the second quarter, the Tigers narrowed the gap to 8-7, before Ogilvie netted two quick three-pointers to go ahead 14-7.

Maria Kuhlmanís two points at the line, followed by a nice layup by Christine Moore narrowed the gap to one again, at 16-15 with :30 on the clock.
The Lions hit a buzzer-beater to end the half, for the 18-15 lead.

Rush City was caught off guard opening the second half, forced into making errors by the quick tempo play of the Lions.

The Tigers recovered, however, and took their first lead of the game with seconds left in the third. Jess Prettner sunk two free throws to give the team the 21-20 edge.

In the fourth, Rush City started to dominate defensively, forcing Ogilvie errors and fouls. The scoring was held fairly even in the fourth, with neither team holding a lead for most of the quarter. Ogilvie managed to pull ahead 35-33 with a little more than one minute remaining, and tallied their next seven points on foul shot opportunities, for the 42-36 win.

Leading the offense for the Tigers was Kuhlman, who picked up 15 points. Mindy Scott added seven, Prettner notched six, and Werner added four. Brooke Larson picked up two to round out the scoring.

The team rounds out its regular season schedule with games Tuesday hosting Maranatha, and Friday at Aitkin.
