Wrestlers went strong against Mille Lacs

By Barbara Brown

The Rush City wrestlers wanted more than anything to show rival Mille Lacs that the Tigers could stand up to them.

The Tigers roared on to the mat Thursday, Feb. 7, determined to win.

The scoreboard did not reflect the intensity with which the team wrestled.

Although the team fell, mostly due to the number of forfeits it had to give up, the wrestlers proved they would not back down from Mille Lacs without a real fight.

The match ended in a 54-17 loss for the Tigers.
ìThe score wasnít really reflective of how we wrestled,î said head coach Kevin Jensen who was visibly pleased with the way his wrestlers went to the mat last week.

ìWe wrestled very well against a tough team,î he said.

Mike Wuorinen, 160, opened the match, which had possibly the greatest attendance of the season by dominating his Mille Lacs opponent, Tyler Walters.

Although Walters scored early with a take-down, Wuorinen quickly answered with escape.

Wuorinen again was taken down and escaped from Walters.

Wuorinen turned the tables then and took down Walters, quickly turned him to his back and pinned him with precious few seconds left in the first period in 1:48.

The team, pumped up by the win, surrounded Wuorinen when he came off the mat.

The Tigers gave up a forfeit at the 189 weight class, an area the team has had a hard time filling all year.

Robert Thomsen came to the mat next to face Rob Martin. Thomsen fell in :33.

Richard Marohn, the 103-pound Tiger who never seems to stop moving on the mat, came out fourth to face Nick Pfaff.

Marohn showed strength in the evenly-matched first period by scoring the only points ñ a take down.

Marohn opened the second period with a takedown and pinned Pfaff in 3:12.
Tim Allerton, 112, wrestled a good match, but his efforts were thwarted when he lost 9-5 against Geoff Springer.

Matt Wuorinen, 119, also lost to his opponent, Dustin Bretzman, 19-87.

Adam Morris, who almost always ends his matches with a bloody nose, wound up victorious in the 125 match-up.

Morris took over the match by scoring 4-1 against Danny Roeschlein in the first period.

The match was stopped early in the second period when Roeschlein needed to take time to regain his composure after his nose started to bleed.

Roeschlein returned to the match only to fall in a major decision by the end of the second period, when Morris racked up 12 in the second to take the score to 16-1.

The Tigers gave up forfeits in both the 130 and 135 slots because Garett Sowman (130) and Brandon Hochstatter (135) both had been injured.

Sam Umbreit, 140, matched up against Matt Steffenson in what was a dead heat first period with both wrestlers scoring five. The second period did not go well for Umbreit who fell to Steffenson in 3:46.

Tim Morris, 145, scored the first points of his match against Justin Jones. Morris made it through the second period after nearly being pinned four times.

Jones pinned Morris in the third period at 4:36.
In the final match of the night, Ray Grabau faced Nick Wilkes at 152. Wilkes dominated from the start with an immediate take down. Grabau escaped quickly, but was taken down two more times.

He escaped from those two take downs, but the fourth proved fatal in the match with Grabau falling in 1:35.

The wrestlers went to Braham Feb. 12 for team quarter finals.
