Taylors Falls residents to vote on extended area phone serviceThe Minnesota Public Utilities Commission mailed ballots to telephone customers in the Taylors Falls (651-465) telephone exchange last week. Taylors Falls customers will have the opportunity to vote on whether their calls to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metropolitan Calling Area (MCA) will become local calls. A majority of customers who cast their votes will decide whether to approve Extended Area Service (EAS) for Taylors Falls. If approved, EAS would allow local instead of long-distance calling between customers in Taylors Falls and the MCA. If a simple majority of telephone customers approve EAS, all customers in the Taylors Falls exchange, including those who fail to vote on the issues and those who vote against EAS, will pay higher monthly telephone rates. Telephone companies serving the affected exchanges have estimated they could implement the service within a year to 18 months. Customers have until March 25 to return the postage-paid ballots to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. Customers will receive one ballot for each residential and business telephone line for which the telephone company bills them. Customers with questions may call the Commissionís Consumer Affairs Office at (651) 296-0406 or toll-free at 1-800-657-3782. Telephone customers may write to the Commission: Taylors Falls EAS, Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, 121 7th Place East, Suite #350, St. Paul, MN 55101-2147. ©ECM Post Review |
