Girls end regular season 14-0 in conference play

Convincing wins over Pine City and Chisago Lakes secured an undefeated Rum River Conference record for the Viking girls basketball squad last week.

It also ensured the team of a number one seed in the Section 6AAA playoffs, which starts Feb. 28.
The victories give North Branch their third straight conference title, and increased their conference game win streak to 34 games.

The title is the teamís sixth in nine years, and they lost only two non-conference games during the 2001- 2002 season, for a 24-2 record.

The team took on Pine City last Tuesday for the second time this season.

The game ended with a wide-margin victory, much like the first matchup.

In the 73-32 win, the Vikes cruised to a 22-6 first quarter lead, and were on top 43-14 at halftime.

At the end of the third, the lead increased to 63-22, as every player saw court time during the game.
ìIt was a nice team effort,î said head coach Dan Schindler.

ìWe had eleven different girls score and it was nice to see some girls get a lot of minutes who work so hard all the time and seldom get the recognition.î

He credits Christina Sampson, Rachel Brown, Brooke Beaver, Alison Trampe, Rauna Dallman, Sarah Rauen, and Sheena Devine for contributing quality minutes in the victory.

Four players hit double digits in the win, led by Megan OíHern with 15, followed by Traci Reimann with 14, Kelly Lines with 12, and Jamie Schlagel with 10. Sampson added six, and Beaver had four.

The teamís 61-28 win against Chisago Lakes came in their final home game of the season Friday.

North Branch ended the first with the 15-3 lead and extended it to a 26-point gap at 34-8 at halftime.

The Vikes scored 21 points in the third, for a commanding 55-15 lead going into the final stanza, where they added six more while allowing 13 Wildcat points.

Again, scoring was spread out evenly throughout the Viking roster. OíHern led with 13 points, while Lines and Reimann each picked up 10, and Schlagel added nine. Sampson had seven, and Devine six for the cause. Rounding out the scoring were Dallman, Brown, and Kara Lundeen with two apiece.

The win over Chisago Lakes also added up to an undefeated home season for the Vikes, which was a top goal for the team along with going undefeated in the RRC.

Just as important as the win was the hard work and dedication of the four seniors on the team, Schindler said.

ìThese four seniors ñ Errin Koehler, Jamie Schlagel, Megan OíHern and Kelly Lines ñ are very special ladies,î he said.ìThey are all great students and represent our school and program with class and dignity.

ìMore than all the wins and championships, I will miss all the memories and good times we have had together.î
