Children need our example if we expect them to have manners

To the editor:

Iím a senior citizen visiting family here in North Branch. I attended a piano recital that was given at the new senior center in North Branch on Monday,
Feb. 18. The children who performed were between the ages of seven and 12 who seemed very talented for only a few years of lessons.

The seniors attending were very rude. While the children were playing some of the people were talking very loudly across the room as if the children were not even there.

One man who was sitting up close to the piano had manners that shocked me when he spoke loudly and said, ěhope you donít mess up.î He said this more than once and to more than one child.

How can adults and seniors complain about manners and respect from children and expect it from them if that is the kind of examples they portray?
