Despite loss, boys hoops played ìbest defenseîBy Barbara Brown The Rush City boys basketball team pulled off its best defensive effort of the season although the team fell to Aitkin in a Feb. 1 home game. Although the Tigers fell to the Gobblers 53-43, head coach Gary Dreissig said the defense played its best yet. The game opened with a relatively even first period. Rush City scored 10 and Aitkin racked up 14. Aitkin returned to the court fired up for the second half and had scored 17 to Rush Cityís 10 by the end of the third quarter. The game finished with a fourth quarter that continued the trend with Aitkin outscoring Rush City 14-9. However, Dreissig said, despite lack of offensive prowess, the teamís defensive skills were put to the test and proven. ìIt was our best defensive effort of the season, holding the high-powered Aitkin offense to only 53 points,î Dreissig said. Some highlights of the defensive game were six steals and 14 defensive rebounds to Aitkinís 12. Brett Dreissig pulled down eight rebounds, Dan Turner snagged six and Kyle Mold also pulled down six. On offense, Brett Dreissig pushed the team forward with 14 total points. He landed all six free throw attempts he was granted, and shot 40 percent with four of 10 2-pointers made. Joe Prettner shined on offense as well. He scored 12 for the team, shooting 67 percent from the field after landing two of three field goals he tried. Prettner also landed two of four free throw attempts and two 2-point tries. Turner sank six for the team total, shooting 60 percent overall. He landed three 2-point shots. Coming up, the boys team hosts two games. The Tigers face Braham Friday night and Ogilvie Feb. 12. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. Two away games follow with Rush City traveling to Maranatha on Feb. 14 and East Central on Feb. 15. ©ECM Post Review |
