Boys split a pair, go to 5-8The North Branch boys basketball squad split two more games last week, losing a heartbreaker to Centennial 78-70 in overtime Tuesday, then defeating Milaca 62-37 Thursday in a conference game. The Vikes controlled the first half against the Cougars, taking a 34-25 lead at half. ìWe played an excellent first half,î head coach Bill Baumann said. Centennial scored first in overtime, and later added a three-pointer to put the game out of reach. Tyler Higley paced the Vikes with 19 points, followed by Matt Fletcher with 14 and Kyle Ekstrom with 12. They avenged the loss with a win over Milaca Thursday, jumping out to a 26-6 lead after the first and a 40-15 halftime advantage. They kept the intensity going in the third, with a 56-23 lead going into the fourth quarter. ìWe came out strong in the first quarter and I think we probably caught Milaca a little flat,î Baumann said. Balanced scoring was a key in the win. Higley led the squad with 17, while Britt Baumann had eight, Jared Gagne had seven, and Fletcher, Jake Anderson and Alex Streater brought home six each. Ekstrom added five to the win. ìThis was probably our best all around team game,î Baumann said. ìWe played together on defense and everybody was in sync on offense.î The Vikes were scheduled to take on Princeton Tuesday, and will travel to Mora Friday. They return home Saturday to take on Fridley. ©ECM Post Review |
