Juliana A. Nystrom

Juliana Augusta Nystrom went to be with the Lord on Jan. 12, 2002, having reached the age of 84 years and five months.

Funeral service was on Friday, Jan. 18, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Rush Point with the Reverend Keith Kolzow officiating. Organist was Shirley Olson and soloist was Marian Eklund. Cross bearer and casket bearers were Julianaís much loved grandchildren, Michael Frederick, Timothy Nehotte, Lance Nehotte, Jason Nehotte, Matthew Frederick, Aaron Frederick, Marshall Frederick, John Martire, and Megan Frederick-Roth. Interment was at Calvary Lutheran Northview Cemetery at Rush Point. Arrangements were by Olson Chapel, Funeral & Cremation Service, Rush City, Minn.

Juliana was born Aug. 13, 1917 in Raymond, MN. The second of nice children born to Gust and Louise (Rahn) Gerlach, she was baptized at the German Lutheran Church in Raymond. She was later confirmed at the German Lutheran Church in Belgrade, MN where the Gerlach family had moved to become engaged in farming.

Juliana attended school through the eighth grade, at which time it became necessary for her to remain home and help with the work on the family farm.

In October of 1934, Juliana met and married Gust George Frederick of Belgrade. They made their home on a farm near Belgrade, and a daughter and three sons were born into the family while they lived there.

The hard times of the Great Depression made it necessary for Juliana and Gust to leave the farm, and they moved to Minneapolis in search of work. While living there another daughter and son were born. Juliana found employment as a floor lady for a plastic company, and she also worked for the Twin Cities Streetcar Company.

Juliana married Willard Nystrom in February of 1957, and together they had one son, Fred. When Fred was four years old they moved from their home in Minneapolis to the Nystrom family farm near Rush Point, Minnesota.

Juliana enjoyed embroidering and crocheting, always had a large vegetable garden, and even grew cucumbers for a number of canning companies. At one time she worked at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Rush City, Minn. where she spent her last days.

She was a member of Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rush Point, and was proud to be the first woman to serve on the church council. She was involved in many of the church activities, and in later years was very thankful when a handicapped accessible ramp was built that enabled her to continue to attend services there.

In September of 2001, failing health caused Juliana to be hospitalized numerous times, and eventually it became necessary for her to become a resident of the Hillcrest Health Care Center.

She is survived by her children and their spouses: Shirley and Len Martire, Saratoga, Calif., David & Mercia Frederick, Bloomington, Ill., Marlys Frederick, Hutchinson, Minn., Franklin & Mary Frederick, Coon Rapids, Minn., Paulette and Richard Nehotte, Richfield, Minn., James Frederick, Golden Valley, Minn., Fred Nystrom, Rush City; nine grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister: Alyce Jensen, Belgrade; brothers and sisters-in-law: Herman and Arlene Gerlach, Ham Lake, MN, Raymond Gerlach, Waseca, Minn; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
