RC Prison population at 400 by end of January

According to Warden Burt Mohs, offender population at the Rush City Correctional Facility will be at 400 by the end of January and will remain at that population for the foreseeable future.

Mohs, speaking to the Community Liaison Committee members last week, said there are currently 375 at the prison with INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) detainees at about 30-40.

The INS population increased slightly, he said, but numbers are still running well below the projected number and that has an impact on the overall prison population.

Mohs explained that the next unit will not open until after July of this year, ìI believe sometime between July and late September 2002 based upon present projects,î Mohs said.
At that time the state will open half of the complex, adding a unit of 138 offenders.

This will necessitate an increase in staffing of correctional officers, case managers and possibly education staff.
Mohs also told the group that the number of offenders employed at the prison through the Plastech/Industry Partnership has dropped significantly.

There are currently only 29 offenders working the day shift and the midnight shift has been shut down until work increases. He noted that this change is due to the impact of the slowing economy.
