Rush City boys basketball struggling through mid-seasonBy Barbara Brown The Rush City boys basketball team is struggling to keep its head above water as the winter sports schedules head into mid-season play. The team fell to Braham during an away game Dec. 21 with a 62-18 loss; shooting only 15 percent in the process. Coach Gary Dreissig still seemed frustrated with the teams performance days after the game. He said he could not figure out what the problem was, but he hoped the holiday break would do the team, and the coaches, good. ìEven though our record is only 1-6, we felt after five games that we played very decent basketball, considering our young squad,î Dreissig said. In the game against Braham, only a couple of players made a showing on the court. Kris Guentzel, who has been consistently offering help for the team this season, came through with 8 points. He landed three of his six attempted two-point shots and sank two free throws. Kyle Mold followed Guentzelís performance with four points toward the teams total. He sank two of five two-point attempts. Mold tried for three field goals, but couldnít get them to stick. Tim Karnick tried for five two-pointers but failed in the attempts. He landed two for the team with free throws. Joe Prettner and Ricky Carlson landed free throws for one point each. Defense was lacking in several areas during the Braham game with the team not able to cover well enough and avoid turnovers. Braham landed six three-pointers in the game, 16 two-point shots and earned 12 free throws. ìIn the Braham game we took a giant step,î Dreissig said. ìUnfortunately it was backwards.î Although Dreissig said he though the team played hard for the most part, the team seemed to stagnate on the court. ©ECM Post Review |
