Shafer concrete firm lauded for work on I-35 improvement project

A Shafer firm was nationally recognized Dec. 1 for excellence in concrete pavement projects.

Shafer Contracting Co. and the Minnesota Department of Transportation Metro Division received the Excellence in Concrete Pavement award during the annual conference in San Diego, Calif.

The duoís award was in the divided highways category for their combined efforts to improve I-35 in the Lino Lakes area.

About six miles of I-35 was renovated and the project was recognized for the concrete pavement quality and smoothness, according to an association statement.

Prior to concrete, the section was covered in asphalt. Workers took off all but two inches of asphalt to leave for a base layer, thereby reducing the cost of the project, the statement said.
