Pine Techís addition started

Construction has finally begun on Pine Technical Collegeís first major addition in several years.

Workers are in the process of building a 3,500 sq. ft. addition to the south end of the current building in Pine City as the first step in a process that will eventually see over 8,000 sq. ft. added to the building and over 11.000 sq. ft. remodeled.

The south addition will, when combined with a remodeled locksmithing lab, house PTCís machining technology program.

Completion of this phase is expected by June of 2002.
During the summer, the equipment for machining will be moved to the programís new quarters and work will begin on an extensive remodeling of and addition to the central part of the building.

Eventually, the old machine shop will become a modern, high tech instructional technology center and a virtual reality center.

This phase is expected to take the summer and much of the fall to complete.

The start of construction marks a milestone in a project that began in 1998 when the Legislature granted the college $1.7 million for the building.

An additional $1.3 million in Federal Economic Develop-ment Administration money was secured to expand the project and several design hurdles had to be overcome to reach the present point.
