Local youth performs Heimlich to save brotherBy Danielle Strenke A third grader at Chisago Lakes Primary School in Chisago City was honored last week with a special award for saving his brotherís life. Eight-year-old Tylor Marier came home after school one day last fall, along with his younger brother, Nathan, a kindergartner. The two have a younger brother, Brandon, who was a year old at the time. While their mother was out of the room for a moment, Brandon had found some crackers in Nathanís backpack and started eating. Tylor quickly noticed that Brandon was making strange noises and coughing. He recognized these as signs that the infant was choking, and began performing the Heimlich maneuver on Brandon. During this time, Nathan ran to get their Mom. After a few quick thrusts, Tylor was able to dislodge the cracker from Brandonís throat, and Brandon was able to breath normally again. Today, Brandon is a healthy 16-month-old toddler, thanks to the responsible and quick action of his big brother. In recognition of his heroism, Tylor received a very special award at the Primary School Friday, Jan. 4, as both the Lindstrom and Chisago City Police Departments presented him with a Life Saving Award. Tylor learned about the Heimlich maneuver from his phy-ed teacher, Deitz Diettrich, who taught all his students about the signs of choking and how to perform the life-saving measure. Diettrich also received an award from the police departments during the presentation last week. Officer Ron Rollins commended Tylor for his heroic efforts, and told Tylor and the rest of his third grade classmates ìyou are very special people.î ©ECM Post Review |
