Vikes boys suffer at hands of Forest Lake

Another loss was handed to the Viking boys basketball squad last week, as they opened up their 2002 schedule with a 70-58 loss to Forest Lake Friday.

The Rangers commanded the first quarter, jumping out to a 20-11 lead. The Vikes rallied in the second to narrow the gap, outscoring Forest Lake 15-9 in the quarter, trailing by only three at 29-26 at the half.

ìWe started out the game cold,î head coach Bill Baumann said. ìBut we started to find the range in the second quarter. We also started to locate their shooters in the second quarter.î

Both teams were pretty evenly matched in the third, with the Rangers taking the 20-16 edge and a 49-42 lead going into the fourth.

The Vikes were able to cut the lead to seven three times in the fourth quarter, but the Rangers held them off for the 70-58 win.

ìI was real proud of the kids,î Baumann said. ìThey could have folded when Forest Lake scored the first six points of the fourth quarter but they battled back. We felt we were never really out of the game, but we couldnít get over the hump.î

Matt Fletcher paced the Vikings with 18 points and four assists. Tyler Higley added 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Britt Baumann tossed in nine points and Jeremy Jaques had eight points with six rebounds. Alex Streater hit with six points, Jared Gagne with four, and Kyle Ekstrom with two and five rebounds.

The loss brings their record to 4-7 overall. This week, North Branch was scheduled to host Centennial Tuesday, and they will travel to face Milaca Thursday.
