Kay Peters

Kay Peters, the daughter of Bernard and Gladys (Dobert) Phelan, Sr., was born November 28, 1943 at Whapeton, North Dakota. She died at her home in Pine City, Minnesota on July 18, 2002, having reached the age of 58 years.
Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2002 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pine City with the Reverend Michael J. Lyons as celebrant. Honorary casket bearers were Kayís grandchildren nd the Heath-Perkins American Legion Auxiliary. Casket bearers were Dan Koller, Jim Lorge, Adolph Fedder, James Phelan, Denny Anderson, and Jeremy Phelan. Interment was at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Pine City. Arrangements were by the Swanson Chapel, Funeral & Cremation Service, Pine City, Minn.
On November 29, 1961, Kay was united in marriage to Duane J. Peters, and together they raised their family of five children.
Her true joys in life were her children and grandchildren, and her happiest moments were when her house was full of family members, for whatever the occasion may have been. In her younger years she enjoyed going camping with her family. Their campsite always had a campfire burning, and usually people were gathered around it until the wee hours of the morning.
An excellent cook, Kay particularly enjoyed cooking for her family. She will always be remembered for her potato salad, potato soup, stuffing, beef roast and egg noodles, which were the favorites of her family.
She also enjoyed Thursday night karaoke when she sang her favorite songs along with her friends. She liked watching the birds at their many feeders while enjoying her morning cup of coffee, watching her flowers bloom, and the smell of newly mown grass.
Kay served as a past president of the Pine City American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 51. As an active member of the group, she participated in the Color Guard events and enjoyed organizing and cooking dinners at the American Legion Club.
Kay is survived by her husband, Duane; her children: Warren and Donna Peters of Rush City, Minn., Mary and Matt Carlson of Harris, Minn, Lori Peters and Bob Neitzel, Stephanie Peters and Curt Soderstrom, Kristi and Steve Schell, all of Pine City; grandchildren: Bethany and Zachary Peters, Cody and Duran Auers, Caleb Sanders, Travis and Tyler Leibel, Christian Flaherty, and Brody Schell; sister: Cheryl Kassahn of Breckenridge, Minn.; brothers and sisters-in-law: Bernard and Kris Phelan, Jr. of Crystal, Minn., and Bob and Jamie Phelan of Columbia Heights, Minn.; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Gladys and Richard Schmidt; her father, Bernard Phelan, Sr.; sister, Arlene Vollrath, and an infant sister, Celia Phelan.
