Best bagger moves on to state competition

By Barbara Brown

Peter Johnson proved himself the fastest grocery bagger in Nelsonís grocery last week and now he has the chance to show the state just how good he is.

Johnson, who has been working at Nelsonís for two years, came out last, but not least, in the competition line-up, but quickly took first place.

His opponents, Pine City store assistant manager Laurie Brown and Ryan Benson, also from the Pine City store, waited in the deli seating area as Johnson bagged his way to victory.

The contestants had to bag the same products into two brown paper bags in the quickest time to win.

They also were judged on style, weight balance between the bags and correct bagging technique.
Johnson entered the competition arena - which was a table at the side entrance to Nelsonís confident he would dominate.

ěI know Iím going to win,î Johnson said in a pre-bag interview. ěIím here to show them Iím the best.î

Johnson bagged a time of about 38 seconds to take top speed position. He also had the highest scores for weight balance and bagging technique.

Johnson will go on to the state best bagger competition at the Mall of America in front of Sears on August 17 where he will face grocery baggers from all over Minnesota.

If he wins the state competition, he can earn a trip to the National Grocers Association annual convention in February in Las Vegas.
