Area churches encouraged to honor labor Labor Day weekend

TO THE EDITOR:
Labor Day is less than one month away. Labor Day weekend signals the end of summer vacation for our children. However, we should not forget that on Labor Day we honor American workers. On the weekend before Labor Day, thousands of congregations all across the country will observe Labor Day from the pulpit. Locally, St. Gregoryís Catholic Church will be participating in ěLabor in the Pulpit,î an interfaith program that draws together the long history of religion and labor, that together we stand firmly on the principles of social justice, equality, dignity, respect, economic justice and fair treatment in the workplace.
Lee Cich, national Vice-President of the Association of Civil Technicians (a union), a member of the Social Justice Leadership Team at St. Gregoryís and a local advocate for affordable housing, will give the reflection at each Mass, following the Gospel. He will emphasize that the faith community walks in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the labor movement, and, in particular, immigrants and day laborers. ěWe are one body, bound up in each. We suffer together, live in the same communities, and together we must call for economic justice for all.î
We encourage other churches and the community as a whole to honor labor from the pulpit on Labor Day Weekend. To learn more about this program, visit the web site of the National Interfaith Committee for worker justice, http://www. nicwj.org or call Bob Hulteen at the Twin Cities Religion and Labor Network at (612) 501-9186.
