July is Relay for Life month

On June 27, North Branch Mayor Roger Else proclaimed July as Relay for Life month, urging all North Branch area residents to join with the volunteers of the American Cancer Society to support this special occasion by participating in the Relay for LIfe.

The local event will be held July 26 at the Tanger Outlet Center.

In the proclamation, the Mayor noted a need for additional funds for cancer research, cancer education, advocacy and service programs for cancer patients and their families.

Additionally, it is noted that the American Cancer Society has innumerable vital cancer projects with volunteers who provide important lifesaving educational programs to our citizens.

And that the American Cancer Society provides the needed services for cancer patients and their families and supports rehabilitation programs for cancer survivors.

Finally, the proclamation notes there is hope in the fight against cancer because of advances in cancer treatment and prevention through the American Cancer Societyís fund-raising event the Relay for Life.

ìItís the most incredible event in which you will ever participate,î said Relay for Life Chairperson Sharon Gallagher.

ìToday, weíre not talking about ìifî we find a cure for cancer, but ìwhen.î Itís exciting to know Iím making a difference.

And you can too.

North Chisago County area cancer survivors, families, friends and others affected by cancer will celebrate life and raise funds to find a cure at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event to be held at Tanger Outlet Center July 26.

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is the ultimate community event.

Teams of eight to 15 people from families, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches and other organizations collect donations for the ACS and commit to having one person walking, jogging or running in relay style around a track for the entire 12-hours event.

This yearís event begins with a Survivorís Reception at 6 p.m. and opening ceremony at 7 p.m.

The survivors take the first lap, indicating the beginning of the all-night event.

This is a great time for health education, games, food, fun and camaraderie. And some exercise, too.

A highlight of the evening is the lighting of the luminaries - white bags with candles inside - decorated in honor of those who have survived cancer or remembrance of those who have not.
The lighted luminaries line the track illuminating the walk for the team members all night. It is a very inspiring moment.

Teams have been formed, but more are welcome.
This yearís goal is $110,000.

This event is truly one of the community highlights each summer. It brings together people of all ages and from all walks of life.
