Rush City FD looking for new ladder truck

By MaryHelen Swanson
The Rush City Fire Department would like to add a new ladder truck to its fleet.

A committee, comprised of City Administrator Daniel Hoffman, Mayor Mike Skalsky, Councilman Jerry Janssen and representatives of the fire department have been investigating the purchase.

Originally, the department was looking at a pumper truck, but with the new type of housing and increased industrial expansion in town, the committee decided a ladder truck would be more suitable.

The cost will be high, so the committee is seeking financial assistance where it can, looking to area beneficiary programs for low interest grants.

The committee has been visiting other communities looking at trucks and even gave one a ìtest rideî in Rush City recently.

The committee is being very careful about planning for this purchase, noted Mayor Skalsky.

Fire department members are being asked to compile a list of the equipment that should be included with the new truck.

After funding is secured, it will take about a year to get the truck. The new ladder truck, Mayor Skalsky said, should last the department about 30 years.
Skalsky said the city and fire department are on the ìright trackî with this purchase.

In other action Monday night:

ï The council approved an agreement with the Minnesota Department of Transportation to accept more than $196,000 from the state toward the I-35 road improvement project that will run from Fairfield to I-35.

This project will consist of creating right turn lanes coming from both the east and west and an alignment of driveways out of the Holiday station corner and the site due north of 361.

Councilman David Bengtson asked if a stop sign could be installed at the end of the driveway out of the Holiday corner, noting how dangerous it can be to turn on to the highway.

It was decided it would probably be difficult to get this in place.

ï Mayor Skalsky told the council that the two high speed internet companies who requested space, would be able to co-exist on the cityís water tower and that services should be available to city residents some time this summer.

ï Set a hearing for annexation of the Rumpel property for July 22. This property is north of the Holiday station.

ï Learned that new regulations have been set for hangar lease at the airport including a rule that only 20 percent of the hangar can be used for non-aviation items.
