Harris hires new engineering firm

By Danielle Strenke
At a special meeting Thurs., May 23, the Harris City Council approved the hiring of a new engineering firm.

After weeks of interviewing several prospective engineering firms, the council voted to retain Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderlik and Associates, Inc.

The firm will replace Thatcher Engineering, which had been the cityís engineering firm for several years.

City Attorney Kevin Shoeberg responded to a letter from Steve Thatcher of Thatcher Engineering last week.

Thatcherís letter alleged that the process in which a new city engineer was selected was flawed. In his response, Shoeberg told Thatcher, ìeach contractor for the City serves at the will of the City Council,î and it is irrelevant that he believes the process is flawed.

Thatcher Engineering requested and was granted inclusion on a recent council agenda to present his proposal to remain as the cityís engineering firm.

At previous and subsequent meetings, the council heard proposals from several other prospective engineering firms.

Mayor Richard Hanson formally announced the appointment of Bonestroo et. al. at Mondayís regular city council meeting.

ï Donation to the food shelf
Also at the meeting, the council was updated on the use by Harris residents of the North Branch Food Shelf. So far this year, 34 families in Harris have utilized its services. The council approved donating $750 to the food shelf.

ï Sheriffís contract
The council also approved an ATV ordinance to regulate the use of all terrain vehicles within the city, and approved a contract for services provided by the Chisago County Sheriffís Department for the remainder of 2002 and all of 2003.
